My older brother has had Juvenile Diabetes since he was seven years old.
He's eighteen now.
For as long as I can remember, I've had to watch him stab himself daily, get shots, watch what he eats, check for keytones, shoot himself with insulin, and, now, have to literally stick a needle in his ass cheek for three days straight because his body doesn't have enough fat anywhere else and he needs SOME place to put the site for his insulin pump or else he'd have to go back to insulin shots.
Words don't do it justice. Words will never do it justice, because those who don't see it or deal with it daily will never understand. People who get a shot once or twice a year will say, "Oh, getting a shot every day isn't THAT bad." Yeah, well, you try it.
The other day, my mom was talking about a possible cure they're testing now - something about using sperm to produce insulin, I didn't really understand the details. It'd only work for males, but... It'd be a start.
God, I hope it works.
If there's nothing else I want to see before I die, it's a cure. Because, as much as I complain about my brother, and as much as I can see his flaws, he doesn't deserve this.
